Exemptions
Business owners having a current workers’ compensation exemption and are listed on sunbiz.org under the typically registered EIN of a small business can add themselves onto the payroll with our system, all without paying workers compensation, so that only additional employees are covered. This reduces the necessary workers’ compensation cost to the small business.
Inclusion on workers’ comp is important!
We have always recommended that the employer-owner include themselves on the workers’ comp especially if they are on the job and exposed to the day-to-day chance of injury. Adding the owner to workers’ compensation insurance requires that the owner revoke their workers’ compensation exemption, which is not permanent and may be restored at any time.
Apply for an exemption!
Owners wanting to exclude themselves from workers’ compensation must have an exemption in place or may apply for one here.. It is important that you understand the status of your workers’ compensation exemption at all times.
Be it covered or exempt, if the owner adds themselves onto the payroll it may add an additional expense to use when filing taxes at year-end. Puting the payment of all, or a portion, of the owner’s personal tax payments on a pay as you go basis. Check with your accountant to be sure.
